Life as a business owner, homeschooling mom, and soon-to-be mom of three is, to say the least, full. My days are a dance of caring for my two daughters, managing my business in just two focused days a week, preparing for a new baby, and homeschooling. It sounds like a lot, (and it is!)—but I’ve found ways to make it not only manageable but fulfilling. Here’s an inside look at how I juggle motherhood and entrepreneurship, and the strategies that make it possible.
Simplify
Simplifying has been my guiding light. When you’re juggling so much, it’s critical to focus on what truly matters and eliminate the rest. This has been a hard lesson to learn and it’s taken me nearly five years to truly embrace. Simplifying in my business means:
- Streamlining my offers. I’ve created sustainable and scalable revenue streams (hello, passive income!). This allows me to focus on activities that generate revenue without burning myself out.
- Forgetting the fluff. I’ve let go of anything that doesn’t align with my goals or serve my audience directly.
- Focused work days: I designate two days/week where I sit down and knock out all my work. That way I can spend the rest of my time focused on my family (and myself!)
By narrowing my focus, I’ve created a business that works for me rather than the other way around.
Automate
Automation has been a game-changer. I rely on tools to keep my business running smoothly, even when I’m busy with my kids or taking a much-needed break. Here’s how I do it:
- Project management tools: These keep me organized and on track with client work and business goals. My favorite tool for this is Trello.
- Client management systems: I’ve streamlined communication and scheduling with tools that handle the back-and-forth for me with my clients. My contracts, invoices, and email communication is all 100% automated and it saves me hours each week. I use Dubsado for my CMS. Use code “ERINPRATT” for 20% off!
- Email funnels: I use Flodesk to automate email sequences that nurture my audience and keep them engaged. If you’re ready to give Flodesk a try, use my discount code for 50% off your first year!
Automation frees up my time and ensures nothing falls through the cracks. This will especially be so helpful when I am on maternity leave later this year!
Calendar Blocking
If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t happen. That’s my mantra. I block time for everything:
- Kids: Dedicated time for homeschooling, co-op days, play, and family activities.
- Business: Marketing, client work, finance reviews, and brainstorming all have their slots.
- Personal: Self-care and rest even gets put on my calendar
That said, I always leave room for flexibility. Life happens, and I’ve learned to adapt without guilt or stress.
Set Boundaries
As a recovering people-pleaser, setting boundaries has been one of my biggest lessons. But it’s really essential. The more I embrace setting (and holding) my boundaries, the happier I am. Here’s what I’ve implemented:
- Time blocks for emails: I no longer respond to emails the moment they come in. Instead, I batch my email work during specific time slots. My auto-responder lets people know when they can expect a reply, setting clear expectations.
- Focused work hours: When I’m working, I’m working. I avoid getting distracted by household tasks or other non-business activities.
- Present Parenting: I removed so many apps and distractions from my phone over the last few months. I no longer compulsively check my email, and I’ve removed all social media from my phone. This allows me to be truly present when I’m with my girls. They don’t see my checking in on things on my phone in the middle of play or learning. I only use my computer to check in on work-related activities.
Boundaries have helped me stay focused and present, whether I’m working or spending time with my family.
Treat Your Home Like a Business
The best way to be successful as both a mom and business owner is to treat your home with the same intentionality as your business. Here’s how I do it:
- Meal plans: Weekly meal planning keeps me from scrambling at dinnertime.
- Cleaning schedules: I time block for household tasks like laundry and cleaning. I also delegate where I can.
- Automation: Autoship for household essentials and grocery pickup have been lifesavers.
Don’t be afraid to hire help, whether it’s a cleaning service or a virtual assistant. Delegation is key. To be transparent, this is totally a work in progress. I aim to have these systems TRULY in place by the time baby #3 enters this world!
Embrace the Chaos
Finally, I’ve learned to embrace the inevitable chaos. No matter how organized I am, life happens. My girls will always be my priority, and if they need me—whether because they’re sick or just having a tough day—everything else can wait. This season of life is fleeting, and I choose to soak in every moment.
Owning a business and being a mother is a gift. It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it. By simplifying, automating, setting boundaries, and treating my home like a business, I’ve created a life that allows me to show up for both my family and my business in meaningful ways. If you’re on a similar journey, know that it’s possible—and so, so worth it.
